How to Plan a Trip to Iceland? The Ring Road in 6 Days

I’m usually not planning my trips too much and prefer to have as much freedom during my travels as possible but Iceland seems to need a bit more attention. We gonna fly there in exactly one month so it seemed like a good idea to start the planning process and to share some findings with you.

So, how to start the planning process of your trip to Iceland?

I had so many questions in mind after buying the flight tickets … how to travel Iceland in budget? Is it even possible? Should we rent a car or a caravan or a jeep? Should we sleep in hostels or have camping van with beds? But then we can’t use F roads? If camping van, then should it have shower and toilet? Should we make the circle around Iceland or just stay around Reykjavik area?

And the list continues. After searching a while I decided to draft a map of ALL the things I wanna see in Iceland and decide everything else later.

There might be some better planning tools out there but I figured that I’ll just use Google My Maps. So here’s the map of places that we are planning to visit during our 6-day Ring Road trip around Iceland. Each colour marks one day.

How to choose what to visit in Iceland?

I just trusted other travellers, read some blogposts and decided not to make things too complicated. After all this trip should be a vacation and we should enjoy it! Even though we have a list of places to visit, we will still give us freedom to decide while we go. Also there are some places on F-roads what means that you can’t get there with a camper van.

What’s better in Iceland – camper van or a car?

We were looking at our map that’s full of predictions and decided that instead of sticking to a strict plan, we should give us some freedom. And how do we do that? Of course with a camper van! If we want, we can ride longer distances on some days or stay somewhere for longer or maybe just skip some sights. So basically we felt that camper van would give us more freedom and that we gonna skip F-roads. After all… road trip with a camper van sounds like a real dream come true!

I’m pretty sure that we won’t drive around in Iceland with a cute Volkswagen van but it’s still nice to imagine it that way. Photo by Nick Baker.

Is it possible to drive around Iceland in 6 days?

According to our plan it seems to be possible but the honest answer is that right now we don’t have any glue if it’s actually a waterproof plan or not. All we know is that we have exactly 6 days to drive the Ring Road of Iceland and after that we’ll spend 2 days in Reykjavik. One of those is a Marathon day – yes, we gonna have our very first marathon ever in Iceland!

Good luck to everyone else who are planning their trip to Iceland!

All in all we have still pretty many decisions to make (e.g. camper van with shower or without? How much food should we take with us from home? What camping gear do we need? etc) so I’ll keep you updated on how’s that going.

All the suggestions on visiting Iceland are very welcome! 🙂

  1. I enjoy spending time outdoors during the summer. My friends and I would take our camping gear, drive up th the foot of the nearest hiking trail, set up our tents and sleep under the stars. It’s an amazing experience.
