First of all I should talk about my flatmate Alex. He’s funny Spanish guy who speaks chinese quite well and has helped me a lot with everything.
My second day in Xiantao started with biking to language school. Traffic is pretty chaotic and reminds me Tanzania but roads are in much better condition and cars are fancier!
After arriving to language school I followed Alex and learned tips and tricks about teaching English to kids. He’s definitely a fun teacher and kids like him a lot. In the afternoon I got a chance to give one lesson by myself. Well.. I definitely didn’t rock in this lesson but hey, it was my first lesson! Not understanding Chinese language was definitely the hardest part of the lesson.
After the lessons we went to some local place to eat with Alex and Chinese girls. I practiced my chopsticks skills and enjoyed the local food. After resting for few hours, we went back to school and I was following Chinese girl Alice in the classes. Later I biked home and didn’t even get lost! Success!
In the evening we biked to KFC with Alex but got a call from Lu about my welcome dinner and went there.
It was eleven of us. From left to right: Alex, Lucy, Lily, Wicky, Emily, Alice, Carrie, Linda, Ada and Lu. Everybody were super friendly and made a lot of jokes 🙂
So first of all there were bowls and plates packed in the plastic, we opened those, poured hot water in the dishes and washed those with chopsticks.
The first dish was a soup with some interesting leaves in it. So many people have joked about Chinese eating soup with chopsticks, that I got a little curious if they are able to do it. But unfortunately all of them used porcelain spoons. After the soup the waitress started to bring some interesting dishes to the table until the table was covered with yummy food. The middle part of the table consisted of a glass what was reversible.
To be honest I can’t name all the dishes on the table but there was definitely way too much food! There were rice balls, rice pancakes, super yummy crabs (my favorite! we ate those with plastic gloves), grilled spicy corn (amazingly good!), different mushrooms, veggies, a lot of meat, many dishes with tofu and a lot of other dishes what I can’t even name. But I must admit the food was delicious! We were drinking hot water next to the food – once again something new for me.
After a dinner we biked towards home and heard some music nearby. I was curious about what’s going on there so we went to the park to see. The park was full of people, many people were dancing, singing, playing instruments and different games, laying in hammocks and chilling. It was unbelievable! Alex told me that it starts every night around 7pm and the park is always full of people, sometimes they are even painting there. Once in a while there are also concerts. Very cool experience and I will definitely go back there to make some nice photos and maybe even a video!
I made two short videos with my iphone:
